Rover FPV Gimbal + Video Link Research

Notes

Summary

Video system status (as of 2026-08-19)

  • Rover video may start as analog, but the plan is to move to digital eventually.
  • The team intends to build their own transceiver link (not yet researched). Open research thread.
  • Implication: don't lock into a gimbal tied to one closed digital VTX ecosystem. Favor gimbals that accept a 19mm FPV camera across multiple systems (analog + DJI + Walksnail) so the camera can be swapped as the link evolves.

The gimbal being considered

  • Caddx GM3 V2 (SKU C0CA-GM030) — $130.99
  • 3-axis mechanical, 48g, ±0.005° accuracy, ±1500°/s
  • Rotation: Yaw ±160°, Pitch ±120°, Roll ±60°
  • Control: head-tracking / UART (MAVLink) / S.BUS / CRSF / PWM; 9–25.2V (3S–6S)
  • Camera compat: Walksnail Avatar / Ascent 19–20mm ONLY — main limitation for a rover that may run analog or DJI

Alternatives (ranked by fit)

  1. XFRobot / XF C-20T — the near-twin, better buy. ~$99 (allxianfei) / $109 (Heewing) / ~€107 (Rotorama). Ignore the $227 Newegg listing. Same 3-axis, ±0.005°, ±1500°/s, same protocols incl MAVLink. Wider camera support: DJI O3/O4/O4 Pro + Walksnail Avatar/Moonlight + 19mm analog. Slightly wider pitch (-105° to +145°). Alloy or polymer body, upright or inverted mount. Sold in O3 / Universal-Walksnail / Analog variants — buy the one matching the camera. Best match given the analog-now/digital-later plan.
  2. RunCam C-20T — same platform, RunCam-branded, on Amazon. UART/PWM/S.BUS/MAVLink, DJI O3 + Walksnail + 19mm analog. ~$100–130. Easy returns.
  3. Caddx GM1 / GM2 — cheaper Caddx siblings (~$90.99 combined listing). GM1 single-axis pitch-only (16g), GM2 dual-axis pitch+roll (30g). Option if yaw/pan isn't needed.
  4. SIYI A8 mini / ZT6 — different class: integrated camera+gimbal, MAVLink-native, built for ArduPilot/PX4 payloads (zoom, tracking, clean telemetry). Heavier (~95g+), pricier (~$200–400). Right direction if the rover runs an autopilot stack and wants a real payload camera rather than an FPV-goggle setup.

Key decision point

FPV-goggle head tracking (GM3 / C-20T / RunCam family — cheap, uses Walksnail/DJI/analog cam) vs autopilot-controlled payload camera (SIYI — MAVLink, more money). Groups 1–3 vs group 4.

Open threads / next steps

  • Confirm which camera + video system the rover will actually run (analog model? DJI O3/O4? Walksnail Avatar?) to pick the exact C-20T variant.
  • Research the custom transceiver/video link (analog → digital migration path). Not yet started.
  • ArduPilot documents GM1/GM2/GM3 and XFRobot C-20T natively for Rover/Plane/Copter, relevant if the rover runs ArduPilot.
